PLACES + THINGS - Morning Mug

Every single morning when I wake up, faithfully, I make a cup of coffee and sit in bed, cozy, propped up by several pillows with my legs peeking out from the blankets…and I sip for a moment or more before the day begins.

Every single morning, I cradle this cup in my hands, and this simple object has become such a crucial part of my morning ritual, that I wanted to choose it with care and intention.

What does it feel like when my finger is wrapped around the handle? When the coffee warms the body, how would that feel sitting in my palms? When its lip touches mine at the first sip, would its sensation inspire me to pause for just a moment longer and close my eyes to take it in?

Touch comes before sight, before speech. It is the first language and the last, and it always tells the truth.

For years, I had admired this particular one from a little boutique in Paris called Astier de Villatte. It pattern inspired by something I’ve long loved, the swirling shapes and unexpected colours of oil paper used to bind books from centuries before. The organic shapes bleed, violet into faded peach, like a watercolour painting.

It’s lighter than it seems, made from black sculptor’s clay, giving it the rustic edges that remind me of the hands that made it. The creators often hire Tibetan monks to handcraft each one, and I like to imagine that there was intention placed during the process of creating it too.

I loved the simple, straight shape and the handle just little enough for my finger to slip through. The balance of it feels natural.

When I take a sip, the delicate walls feel elegant on my lips, and it causes me to pause and admire this little piece of everyday art that is nestled in my hands, every single morning.
